Spanish Professor Creates Exhibit at New Rochelle Public Library
"Celebrating Don Quixote: 400 Years" on display Aug 19 to Sept 15
New Rochelle, NY – Brother Joseph Cussen, Iona Spanish professor, has created a unique exhibition entitled “Celebrating Don Quixote: 400 Years” in the Lumen Winter Gallery, New Rochelle Public Library from August 19 until September 15. The exhibit features books, art and artifacts related to Miguel de Cervantes’ great novel, including over 20 examples of translated volumes, prints of scenes by G. Doré, illustrated proverbs and sayings, photographs of La Mancha today, and related ephemeral Br. Cussen has collected over many years. The exhibit is free and open during regular library hours.
The 400th anniversary of Don Quixote provides the opportunity to reexamine the timeless story of the idealist, Don Quixote, who struggles to practice chivalry, and his clashes with life’s realities as portrayed by the practical Sancho Panza. The story’s universal message of reconciliation between the real and ideal has endured since its first printing in 1605. Cervantes’ story continues to appeal to all ages, who find enjoyment and meaning in the adventures of the knight and his squire.
Miguel de Cervantes, now considered to be one of the most important authors in Hispanic literature, was born into a struggling family in 1547 in Alcalá de Henares, Spain, and died a poor man in 1616. He once referred to himself as one “more versed in sorrows than in song,” having suffered many failures and one triumph – Don Quixote. His book has been the most translated novel, and the story has been retold in art, ballet—and a Broadway musical, “Man of La Mancha.”
