Degree Program in Computer Science Earns ABET Accreditation

New Rochelle, NY – Iona today announced its bachelor of science degree program in computer science has been accredited by the Computing Accreditation Commission of ABET (Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology), Inc.

“This accreditation is a tribute to the work of the Computer Science faculty, and demonstrates Iona’s commitment to excellence. The greatest beneficiaries are Iona’s computer science students. As they prepare for careers in industry or apply to graduate programs, they can be confident of the education they have received at Iona.“ said Robert Schiaffino, PhD, chair of the computer science department.

Programs accredited by ABET are required to continuously improve their educational quality, including setting specific and measurable goals for students, assessing the achievement of these goals, and improving their programs based on the assessment results. Accreditation helps prospective students choose programs that will prepare them well for their future careers.

“ABET’s recent accreditation of the BS program in computer science at Iona further validates the fact that the College is dedicated to providing its students with academic programs that meet the highest professional standards,“ said Alexander Eodice, PhD, dean of the School of Arts and Science.

In addition to the accredited BS in computer science, the department offers a BA in computer science, an MS in computer science, an MS in telecommunications and an MS in educational technology. Five-year combined bachelor/master’s degree programs are also available. The goals of the computer science department are to set the theoretical foundations of computer science within a liberal arts setting, to enable students to apply these foundations, to provide students the necessary practical and analytical skills for careers in a technical environment and to lay the groundwork for continued education and growth in the computing field.

Founded in 1940 by the Congregation of Christian Brothers, Iona College is a private, coeducational institution of learning in the tradition of American Catholic higher education. Iona offers undergraduate degrees in liberal arts, science and business administration, as well as master of arts, master of science and master of business administration degrees and numerous post-graduate certificate programs.
