Rudy Giuliani to Present ‘Principles of Leadership’ at Fourth Annual Presidential Leadership Series Nov. 10

New Rochelle, NY – Rudolph Giuliani, 107th Mayor of New York City (1993–2001), will discuss “Principles of Leadership” on Thursday, November 10 at 7 p.m in the Mulcahy Campus Events Center, on Iona College’s main campus at 715 North Ave. in New Rochelle. Doors will open at 6 pm. This event is the Fourth Annual Presidential Leadership Series and is free and open to the public. Parking is available on the main campus.

GiulianiUnder Giuliani’s leadership, overall crime fell 65 percent, murder was reduced by 70 percent, and the FBI recognized New York City as the safest large city in America. Giuliani turned an inherited $2.3 billion deficit into a multi-billion dollar surplus through tax reductions and fiscal discipline and led New York City to an era of broad-based growth with a record 450,000 new private sector jobs created in eight years. The city became the best known example of the resurgence of urban America.

In the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks, Giuliani was widely praised for his leadership and involvement with rescue and recovery efforts. He was named Person of the Year by Time magazine, knighted by Queen Elizabeth of England, and presented with the Ronald Reagan Presidential Freedom Award by former first lady Nancy Reagan. “He is a hero to many, an icon of steadfastness in the midst of chaos…Giuliani’s eloquence under fire has made him a global symbol of healing and defiance,” said Eric Pooley, Time magazine, in December 2001.

After completing his second term, Giuliani founded Giuliani Partners in January 2002 and quickly established the professional services firm as a leader in fields including emergency preparedness, public safety, leadership during crises, corporate governance, and financial management. Consulting magazine named Giuliani Consultant of the Year in Spring 2002.

“Our students have much to learn from Rudy Giuliani’s life story as the grandson of Italian immigrants who, through a tremendous work ethic and dedication to education, attended college and went on to graduate cum laude from law school. We will certainly have much to reflect on as he tells us how his long public service career enabled him to provide our nation strength and inspiration during the hours, days and weeks following September 11,” said Brother James A. Liguori, president of Iona College.

The Presidential Leadership Series is made possible by the generosity of Maryanne C. Franchella and Richard J. Franchella ’82. Founded in 1940 by the Congregation of Christian Brothers, Iona College is a private, coeducational institution of learning in the tradition of American Catholic higher education. Iona, currently listed in the US News and World Report's annual "America's Best Colleges 2006" and The Princeton Review's Best Northeastern Colleges 2006 edition, offers undergraduate degrees in liberal arts, science, and business administration, as well as master of arts, master of science and master of business administration degrees and numerous post-graduate certificate programs.
