Intel Names Iona a Top 50 “Most Unwired” U.S. Campus

New Rochelle, NY – Iona College has been named among the nation’s top 50 “Most Unwired Campuses” in Intel Corporation’s second annual survey on wireless Internet access at colleges and universities. According to Intel, the Center for Digital Education found that 74 percent of this year’s top 50 schools have 100 percent wireless network coverage on campus, up from 14 percent of the top 50 in 2004.

The first college in the metropolitan area to install a completely wireless local area network (LAN) in 2001, Iona is also among only six New York State colleges or universities to make Intel’s list this year. Students at Iona can use computers to obtain information by accessing the College’s computer network, library databases or the Internet from anywhere on the 35-acre campus, 24 hours a day.

“The class of 2009 will graduate to a world far more technologically advanced than it is today. Wireless networks are connecting students and faculty to vital academic resources, providing improved efficiencies for faculty and staff and overall creating a new and enriched social fabric on campus,” said Dr. Richard Beckwith, an ethnographer with Intel’s Corporate Technology People and Practices Research Group.

Intel based the survey findings on the percentage of college campuses covered by wireless technology, the number of undergraduate students and the computer-to-student ratio for each school.

Founded in 1940 by the Congregation of Christian Brothers, Iona College is a private, coeducational institution of learning in the tradition of American Catholic higher education. Iona, currently listed in the US News and World Report's 19th annual "America's Best Colleges 2006" and The Princeton Review's Best Northeastern Colleges and Best 237 Business Schools 2006 editions, offers undergraduate degrees in liberal arts, science, and business administration, as well as master of arts, master of science and master of business administration degrees and numerous post-graduate certificate programs.
