Mass Communication Students to Intern with NBC Sports
at the Torino 2006 Olympic Winter Games
New Rochelle, NY – A group of 11 Iona College mass communication majors have been selected to the NBC Sports internship program at the Torino 2006 Olympic Winter Games in Turin, Italy. Hundreds of students applied to the program and, having survived the network’s rigorous interview process, the interns are among a total of 122 finalists from several institutions, including Syracuse and Cornell. Throughout the month-long internship, Iona will post a blog chronicling the experience with daily journals and photos from the students. Click here to meet the interns. “Being accepted as an intern for the Games is so exciting. Not only will we be among thousands of amazing world athletes, but we will also be working with an incredible broadcast network. To be honest, I get chills every time I think about it,” said Samantha Ryan, a senior from Kingston, New York majoring in mass communication with a concentration in television and video production. The students’ responsibilities will range from working as production assistants to compiling information for highlight tapes as loggers. They will receive six credits for the internship. As NBC states on its web site, the internship program is geared to provide students real-world experience that applies coursework learned in the classroom with practice in the workplace. Marta Kowal, a senior from Bedzin, Poland, will be a hostess in the Olympic
villages because she is fluent in three languages. “This will be a
perfect ending to my studies at Iona and I am thrilled I was given this opportunity,” said
Kowal. Founded in 1940 by the Congregation of Christian Brothers, Iona College is a private, coeducational institution of learning in the tradition of American Catholic higher education. Iona, currently listed in the US News and World Report's annual " America's Best Colleges 2006" and The Princeton Review's Best Northeastern Colleges 2006 edition, offers undergraduate degrees in liberal arts, science, and business administration, as well as master of arts, master of science and master of business administration degrees and numerous post-graduate certificate programs.
