Students are Thrilled to See Numerous Recreation and Wellness Opportunities Offered at the Newly Opened Hynes Athletics Center

New Rochelle, NY – Students returned for the spring semester excited to see the newly opened Hynes Athletics Center and to learn about the wide range of wellness classes and activities offered through Iona’s recently created Recreation and Intramural Office. “Everything is amazing inside! This building is really going to move Iona forward as the student union did just last fall. I cannot wait for the fitness classes to begin so I can take full advantage of the Center,” said Michelle Babb, a senior and residence assistant in Loftus Hall.

Boasting a state-of-the-art cardiovascular center, three multi-purpose courts, a rowing tank and an aerobics/dance studio, the Hynes Center will enable Iona’s non-athletes to participate in an intramural program that includes basketball, volleyball, indoor soccer, dodgeball, wiffle ball, softball and ultimate Frisbee leagues. Classes in Pilates, yoga, salsa dancing, body sculpting, meditation and more will also be offered by qualified instructors at a very reasonable cost.

“The Hynes Center is awesome and fits right into campus. The facility represents Iona’s community-centered mission and promotes personal well-being for all members of the College. Iona continues to seek ways to enhance campus life for everyone,” said Adam Krumm, senior and president of the Student Government Association.

The Hynes Athletics Center, made possible through the tremendous generosity of James and Anne Marie Hynes, is part of Iona’s Vision Into Reality Capital Campaign, which closed in January 2005 at over $82.6 million. The campaign also funded the Iona College Arts Center (opened in October 2000), renovations of the science building and the former Mulcahy Campus Events Center (now part of the Hynes Center), a new main entrance, an endowment for more than 23 scholarship funds and the Robert V. LaPenta ’67, ’00H Student Union (opened in August 2005). The College recently embarked on a new campaign, Visions of Excellence, to expand and renovate Ryan Library, in addition to constructing a new façade for the building. These facilities will immeasurably enhance Iona’s fast-growing reputation.

Founded in 1940 by the Congregation of Christian Brothers, Iona College is a private, coeducational institution of learning in the tradition of American Catholic higher education. Iona, currently listed in the US News and World Report's annual " America's Best Colleges 2006" and The Princeton Review's Best Northeastern Colleges 2006 edition, offers undergraduate degrees in liberal arts, science, and business administration, as well as master of arts, master of science and master of business administration degrees and numerous post-graduate certificate programs.
