Iona Alumnus Donates $11k to Torino Winter Olympic Interns

New Rochelle, NY – When Tom Murphy, Iona Class of 1957, heard about the College’s 11 mass communication students interning with NBC Sports at the Torino 2006 Winter Olympic Games, he wanted to help cover their travel expenses. So, the Huntington, NY resident sent Iona a check for $11,000, one thousand dollars for each student. “When I read a New York Times article that mentioned all of their expenses were not paid for, I wanted to help. This sends a message to them that they are part of the Iona family, as I am. My Iona education greatly enriched my life, as it is clearly doing for them,” said Murphy.

Hundreds of students applied to the NBC Sports internship program and, having survived the network’s rigorous interview process, Iona’s 11 interns are among a total of 122 finalists from several institutions, including Syracuse and Cornell. Throughout the month-long internship, Iona posted a blog chronicling the experience with daily journals and photos from the students.

“I was so stunned when I heard about Mr. Murphy’s donation that I nearly cried. It is truly amazing and I’m speechless,” said senior Kelly Stone, who was one of the students that interned at the Torino Games.

Iona’s department of mass communication is one of only four programs in New York State to feature accreditation by the Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communication – ACEJMC. Undergraduate degrees are offered with specializations in advertising, journalism, public relations, or television and video production. The department also offers a master of science degree in journalism and the only master of arts degree in public relations between New York City and Boston.

Founded in 1940 by the Congregation of Christian Brothers, Iona College is a private, coeducational institution of learning in the tradition of American Catholic higher education. Iona, currently listed in the US News and World Report's annual " America's Best Colleges 2006" and The Princeton Review's Best Northeastern Colleges 2006 edition, offers undergraduate degrees in liberal arts, science, and business administration, as well as master of arts, master of science and master of business administration degrees and numerous post-graduate certificate programs.
