Mock Trial Team Makes Mark at Regional Tournament
Captain Tsveta Gospodinova Receives ‘Best Attorney’ Vote
New Rochelle, NY – Iona’s Mock Trial Team
received the “Best Attorney” honor for the second consecutive
year at a regional tournament held February 17 to 19. Junior and team captain
Tsveta Gospodinova was voted “Best Attorney” at this year’s
competition, which consisted of 24 teams from 14 institutions. “To
achieve this honor two of the last three years we’ve been at the
tournament, and with two different students, is a testament to the College
and its program,” said attorney Adam Detsky, coach of Iona’s
nine-member squad.
Preparation for the tournament included an average of 12 hours of practice
a week and, during the competition, students were judged by three attorneys
who recorded scores on a one to 10 ranking. The mock trials consisted of
four rounds and each team prosecuted and defended a case twice.
The regional tournament inspired Iona’s team to request that the
College support them for two invitational tournaments next year in preparation
for the regional tournament and provide their membership to the Center
for Computer Assisted Legal Instruction (CALI), an online classroom used
by law schools nationwide that provides over 600 lessons in various legal
topics.
