Battle of the Sexes Volleyball Game to Raise Funds for Breast Cancer Research
Iona Women’s Volleyball vs. Men’s Water Polo 7 pm May 1 New Rochelle, NY – The Iona women’s volleyball team will challenge the men’s water polo team in a volleyball game to raise funds and awareness for breast cancer research Monday, May 1 at 7 pm in the Hynes Athletics Center. All of the proceeds will be donated to breastcancer.org and the cost for admission is $2; however, spectators are welcome to donate more. “This is the first time in Iona history that a women’s team has competed against a men’s team and I’m glad we aren’t just playing for pride, but for a very important cause as well. Hopefully, the Hynes Hooligans and many of Iona’s neighbors will come cheer us on and contribute to the cause for breast cancer awareness,” said event creator Chris Vidale, a junior water polo captain from Apopka, Florida. The game will take place in remembrance of Laura Brilla, mother of junior volleyball player Katie Brilla from Valhalla, N.Y. Diagnosed with breast cancer in 2000, Laura died on March 10, 2003 and, according to Katie, “was the most kind-hearted Yankee fan you could ever meet who would be very proud to see her daughter and friends ‘fight the good fight’ for breast cancer research.” Anyone who is interested in donating funds directly to breastcancer.org can do so at http://www.breastcancer.org/donations_intro.html or mail a check to breastcancer.org gifts, 111 Forrest Ave. 1R, Narberth, PA 19072. Founded in 1940 by the Congregation of Christian Brothers, Iona College is a private, coeducational institution of learning in the tradition of American Catholic higher education. Iona, currently listed in the US News and World Report's annual "America's Best Colleges 2006" and The Princeton Review's Best Northeastern Colleges 2006 edition, offers undergraduate degrees in liberal arts, science, and business administration, as well as master of arts, master of science and master of business administration degrees and numerous post-graduate certificate programs.
