Iona Welcomes Australian Rainforest Activist John Seed

New Rochelle, NY – John Seed, an internationally renowned Australian rainforest activist, will present “Earth, Spirit, Action!” at 12 pm in the Robert V. LaPenta Student Union on Thursday, May 4. Through poetry, song and spoken word, Seed will explore the philosophy of deep ecology and the psychological tools that allow us to be engaged and effective, and to act as agents of healing change. This event, sponsored by Iona’s Environmental Concerns Committee with the Office of Mission Integration and Campus Ministries, is free and open to the public. Founder and director of the Rainforest Information Centre in Australia, Seed has been at the forefront of the world environmental movement for over 25 years. He has created numerous projects protecting rainforests in South America, Asia and the Pacific through providing sustainable development projects for indigenous inhabitants. Seed founded the World Rainforest Report (www.rainforestinfo.org.au) and remains one of its editors. In 1984, he helped initiate the US Rainforest Action Network, which grew out of the first of his many US roadshows. In 1995, he was awarded the Order of Australia Medal by the Australian Government for services to conservation and the environment. Seed is an accomplished bard and songwriter, and regularly lectures at universities in all over the world. The Christian Science Monitor has referred to him as "the town crier for the global village." Founded in 1940 by the Congregation of Christian Brothers, Iona College is a private, coeducational institution of learning in the tradition of American Catholic higher education.
