Alumni Professionals to Meet Career-Minded Students at Mentoring Event
November 30, 2006 – New Rochelle, NY – A group of successful Iona College alumni from companies like Procter & Gamble, Deutsche Bank, Bayer, and CourtTV will meet with over 100 undergraduate students for a career networking event tonight. The purpose of the event is to establish lasting relationships between students who are preparing for careers and professionals in related fields who are willing to provide guidance and advice. Deborah O’Connor ’77, Director of University Relations for Standard & Poor’s, will deliver the keynote address. Roundtable discussions will follow, giving students an opportunity to ask mentors about making educated career choices, professional etiquette in the workplace, and strategies for an effective job search. Afterward, an open networking reception will allow students the opportunity to mingle and converse with alumni mentors. Participating alumni mentors include John D. O’Shaughnessey ’61, Operations Officer (Retired), CIA; John T. Lettieri ’73, Director, Clinical Pharmacology, Bayer; and Marisa Fontana’03, Tournament Services Manager, Barclay's Classic/PGA. This event was developed by the Iona College Alumni Association, the Gerri Ripp Center for Career Development, the Office of Student Development and the Southern Connecticut Alumni Chapter. Marie Riffel, Director of the Career Center, said, “The “Meet a Career Mentor” concept was generated by students’ requests to connect with alumni in order to learn more about specific career fields. Career exploration is an important part of the career development process and this event is designed to help students gain the information they need to make educated career decisions. Our hope is that these students will one day return to Iona to share their own career successes.” Founded in 1940 by the Congregation of Christian Brothers, Iona College is a private, coeducational institution of learning in the tradition of American Catholic higher education. Iona, currently listed in the US News and World Report's annual "America's Best Colleges 2007" and The Princeton Review's Best Northeastern Colleges 2007 and Best 237 Business Schools 2006, offers undergraduate degrees in liberal arts, science, and business administration, as well as master of arts, master of science and master of business administration degrees and numerous post-graduate certificate programs.
