Justice Antonin Scalia to Speak at Iona College Jan. 23

January 16, 2007 – New Rochelle, NY – U.S. Supreme Court Associate Justice Antonin Scalia will deliver an address, “On Interpreting the Constitution” at Iona College on Tuesday, January 23. The School of Arts and Science has named Justice Scalia the Jack Rudin and John G. Driscoll Distinguished Visiting Professor for the spring semester.

ScaliaAppointed to the bench in 1986 by President Ronald Reagan, Scalia has been a foremost proponent of the originalist theory of Constitutional interpretation. On the court, Justice Scalia is known for his incisive questioning of attorneys, his impressive intellect and wit, and his down-to-earth writing style.

Scalia distinguished himself throughout his academic career, graduating as valedictorian from both St. Francis Xavier High School in Manhattan and Georgetown University, where he received an AB summa cum laude in history. At Harvard Law School , he served as editor of the Harvard Law Review and graduated magna cum laude.

After a brief stint in commercial law, Justice Scalia taught law at the University of Virginia. He began a career in government service during the Nixon administration, serving in various legal capacities for the Office of Telecommunications Policy, the Administrative Conference of the United States, and the Office of Legal Counsel in the Justice Department. Upon the election of President Jimmy Carter, Scalia left government service to teach law again at Georgetown University Law Center, then at the University of Chicago and as visiting professor at Stanford. Eventually, after serving as chairman of the American Bar Association’s section of administrative law, he was tapped by President Reagan in 1982 to serve in the U.S. Court of Appeals, District of Columbia Circuit.

Justice Scalia lives in Northern Virginia with his wife Maureen (nee McCarthy) and is father to nine grown children.
