Iona Implements Text Message Emergency Notification System

April 26, 2007— New Rochelle, NY— Iona College today announced that it has implemented an emergency text message notification system to increase campus safety on both its New Rochelle and Rockland campuses. College officials are encouraging students, faculty, administrators and staff to opt into the notification list by registering their cell phone numbers through a secure Web site.

In the event of security emergencies or campus closings due to weather, the Campus Safety and Security department will send a text alert to all registered cell phones. The service will be provided by e2Campus.

The tragedy at Virginia Tech has highlighted the importance of safety issues at colleges and universities nationwide. Iona President James A. Liguori, CFC, said, “The safety of the Iona community is our top priority. We continuously evaluate the security measures in place and add new measures as the circumstances dictate.”
