Bernie Williams to Deliver Iona Commencement Address
David Anthony Pope and Robert M. Morgenthau to Receive Honorary Degrees New Rochelle, NY – May 10, 2007 – Yankee great Bernie Williams will deliver the Commencement address to Iona College’s Class of 2007 Sunday, May 20 at 11:00 a.m. in The Theater at Madison Square Garden. Along with the Iona undergraduates and graduate students receiving degrees, Williams will receive an honorary doctorate in humane letters. In addition, David Anthony Pope, president and CEO of the Generoso Pope Foundation, and Robert Morgenthau, Manhattan District Attorney, will be presented with honorary doctorates in humane letters and law, respectively. In 1991, Williams began his major league baseball career with the Yankees. The talented switch-hitting center fielder remained loyal to the Yankees, playing all of his 16 major league seasons with the organization and earning a career batting average of .297. A five-time All Star, recipient of four Gold Gloves, and four-time World Series champion, he is the only player in major league history to have won a batting title, a Gold Glove, and a World Series Championship in the same season (1998). He also holds the record for the most post-season home runs (22) and was the first player in major league baseball to ever hit a home run from both sides of the plate in a post-season game. Williams’ tenure with the Yankees came to an end in 2007, allowing him to concentrate on his musical career. His acclaimed 2004 album, “The Journey Within,” showcased his classically informed guitar technique along with an ability to compose appealing, heartfelt jazz. He has lent his support to non-profit charities such as the Home Run Club, which helps provide medical care to homeless and needy children. He and his wife, Waleska, also support the Hillside Food Outreach meal program, which delivers food to hungry families in Westchester County. He currently serves the Outreach as a spokesman and fundraiser, and has hosted all the charity’s major fund-raising events since 2002. (-30-) For questions or more information please contact:
