Iona Hosts JOYWAR: Intellectual Property and the Myth of Originality an Evening with Joy Garnett
February 26, 2008 New Rochelle, NY – The Iona College Council on the Arts will host an exhibit, Scoundrel Time: Paintings by Joy Garnett in The Brother Kenneth Chapman Gallery from February 25 through Thursday April 17th with an opening reception March 2 between 1:00 – 3:00 pm. Controversial artist Joy Garnett appropriates news and documentary photographs from newspapers, internet and other media, and re-invents them as paintings. Her work mines the tensions between the open-ended narratives of art, and ubiquitous media representations of real-life events.
The issue of copyright infringement is such an important concern the faculty has created a series of lectures covering various aspects and opinions on what constitutes copyright infringement. The series of lectures, Authors, Inventors, Imposters and Thieves: Perspectives on Intellectual Property sponsored by the Iona College Honors Program, Film Program, English Department, and Office of the Dean of Arts and Sciences is a day-long event beginning at 9:00 a.m. in Spellman Lounge through 2:00 p.m. Covering topics from “intellectual property” to “pop, pulp and borrowed tunes”, this event facilitated by Iona’s faculty, will educate, enlighten and engage students, faculty and staff to explore the complexities of this diverse issue. This event in conjunction with Ms. Garnett’s visit will give students a comprehensive and thought-provoking experience.
