Iona College Student Government Association Set Goal of 100% Voter Registration for Residential Iona Students

New Rochelle, NY – The Iona College Student Government Association (SGA) has embarked on an ambitious initiative to obtain 100% voter registration for all eligible New Rochelle residential Iona students.  “It’s important for our student body to be represented in the town of New Rochelle.  Being a part of the political process begins with embracing the privilege to be a registered voter.” said Scott Mangino, SGA President.  Currently the SGA has engaged many groups, offices and departments, including the Iona Democrats, Iona Republicans, and the Political Science department, to lead a joint effort in achieving its goals.

Resident Assistants have volunteered to assist in the registration efforts by making voter registration forms available for their dorm residents.  Other members of the SGA will also be available throughout the campus in the coming months with voter registration forms for easy access for all students.

“ Iona College students take pride in the city in which we live.  With over 1000 on-campus and almost 1000 off-campus students having voting rights in this district, city and country, we are going to demonstrate that our student population has a voice. It is our duty and responsibility to vote.” said Mangino.

Director of Student Development, Liz Olivieri-Lenahan expressed great pride when speaking about the collaborative and ambitious efforts of the student body. “The students are practicing good citizenship by actively participating in the registration process. I’m proud of their motivation in taking the lead on this important initiative.  Their actions embody the mission that is Iona,” said Olivieri-Lenahan.

“It’s inspiring to see our students become energized by the political process” said Dr. Jeanne Zaino, Chairperson of Iona’s Political Science department.  “This generation has a great investment in the upcoming presidential elections.  Their empowerment begins with becoming a registered voter.  I encourage all eligible students to register in time for the presidential election.”
