IONA COLLEGE RECEIVES $5 MILLION GIFT FROM ANNA MAY AND EUGENE P. CONESE, SR.

Iona College, in New Rochelle, New York has received a $5-million gift from Anna May and Eugene P. Conese, Sr., ’51, ’01H. This generous gift has been directed to support the college’s Visions of Excellence Campaign. Mr. and Mrs. Conese, married 53 years, are active philanthropists in Coral Gables, Florida and Newport, Rhode Island. Mr. Conese graduated from Iona College in 1951 with a BBA in accounting and received an honorary doctorate in 2001. “I attended Iona because it was a good Catholic school. I was the first in my family to graduate from college, and I have very fond memories,” said Mr. Conese.

This gift will be acknowledged by the college with a dedication ceremony which will rename the North Hall student residence hall, to Conese Hall. “The naming of the residence hall is a fitting tribute to Mr. and Mrs. Conese who have been so generous to Iona over the years. We look forward to celebrating at a dedication ceremony on October 4, 2008,” said Brother James A. Liguori, President of Iona College.

A successful businessman, Mr. Conese, retired after an impressive career as chairman and chief executive officer of World Air Lease, Inc., chairman and chief executive officer and founder of, Greenwich Air Services, Inc., and The Greewich Company Ltd.

Appointed to Iona’s Legal Board of Trustees in 1994, Mr. Conese has devoted much of his time, talent, and treasure to his alma mater over the past decade and a half. “Mr. and Mrs. Conese are a testament to alumni charitable giving,” said Rich Petriccione, Vice President of Advancement and External Affairs.

Founded in 1940 by the Congregation of Edmund Rice Christian Brothers, Iona College is a private, coeducational institution of learning in the tradition of American Catholic higher education. Iona, currently listed in the US News and World Report’s annual “America’s Best Colleges 2008” and The Princeton Review’s “Best Northeastern Colleges” 2008 edition, offers undergraduate degrees in liberal arts, science, and business administration, as well as Master of Arts, Master of Science and Master of Business Administration degrees and numerous post-graduate certificate programs.
