Hugh Berberich, Assistant Professor of Fine and Performing Arts at Iona College and Director of Music at St. John the Evangelist Church in Mahopac, NY passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday June 10, 2009. A Funeral Mass was celebrated Monday, June 15, at 11 am at St. John the Evangelist Church.
Mr. Berberich started teaching at Iona in 1979 and became full time in l981. He taught Music Appreciation and Music in Film and Video at Iona College and in earlier years he directed the Iona Vocal Ensemble. He was also music director for St. Augustine Church in Larchmont, NY for over twenty-five years.
As a concert vocalist he performed under Leonard Bernstein, Zubin Mehta, Kurt Masur and many others throughout the years. He also performed with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra.
Mr. Berberich received his Bachelor and Master of Music Degrees from the Manhattan School of Music in New York City. While in College he began performing professionally and was accepted into three major performing Unions in New York, (AGMA, AFTRA, and AGVA).
"Hugh Berberich had a wonderful ability to bring forward the resonant beauty and power of music, resultantly expanding and enriching the listening landscapes in each of his students. He was an immensely talented artist and educator,” said Catherine Mapp, Iona College, Associate Professor and Chairperson, Fine and Performing Arts Department.
