New Rochelle, New York (February 4, 2010) In celebration of Women's History Month, Iona College will feature paintings by Patricia Horing & Kristin McElroy, whose work explores the joys and tensions of family relationships through portraits and intimate scenes of daily life.
Entitled "Family Matters," the exhibit will be on display at the Brother Kenneth Chapman Gallery at Iona College, 715 North Avenue, New Rochelle from March 7 to April 8. There will be an opening reception from 1 to 3 pm, Sunday, March 7.
The paintings depict the psychological undercurrents and small, unobserved moments that are the foundations of 'family.' The suburbs loom large here, as interiors reflect the suburban paradoxes of comfort and claustrophobia, intimacy and alienation.
The artists are friends and neighbors from nearby Larchmont, and have painted together since 2006. Ms. McElroy is a graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design. Ms. Horing's portrait of her plumber, entitled "Herman oozed charm like a leaky pipe drips water," 2007, is currently on view at the Smithsonian's National Portrait Gallery in Washington, DC, as part of the Outwin Boochever National Portrait Competition.
