Name: Mr. Adam Detsky Department: Criminal Justice and Political Science (undergraduate) and Criminal Justice (Graduate)Years at Iona: Seven and countingUndergraduate: University of Maryland, College Park - Bachelors degree in Criminal Justice, 1999 Graduate school: Syracuse University, College of Law - Juris Doctor (J.D.), 2002 Interests: Mock Trial takes up most of my free time, but ultimately, I tend to be an average person I think; do the Yankees and Giants count as interests? Why Iona?: I was a former mock trial competitor on the University of Maryland team. Over 275 colleges compete annually and it was easily the greatest memory I have of college outside of the friends I made. We traveled the country competing with, and then getting to know, students from all over the country. When I graduated undergraduate, I wasn't ready to give it up. So along with an area attorney, we formed a team at Syracuse University. In less than two years, we went from non-existent program to winning a national tournaments and finishing as runner up for the national championship. After graduating Syracuse, I moved back to Westchester County. I missed the camaraderie with the students and coaches of mock trial and set out to create a team in Westchester County. I called around to all of the local colleges until I came across Dr. Paul O'Connell of the criminal justice department. He was enthusiastic and thought Iona could really benefit from offering this pre-law opportunity. After several years of scraping by, hardly having enough interest to form a team and barely holding our own at tournaments, the school made a full commitment to the team. We now travel to four or five tournaments a year and scrimmage area schools routinely. We have had six top 10 finishes in the past two years.Hobbies: I am a jogger. On Sept. 26., I ran my first marathon. Up until now, I've only done 5K's, 10K's and half-marathons. Teaching is actually my other hobby. I am a full-time practicing attorney in the State of New York, specializing in construction defense. The cases I handle are matters involving personal injury and I do strictly defense work.Between long jogs, going to the gym and teaching three times per week, I don't really have the time for other hobbies.Fun Fact: I am big into charity work. For example, my marathon last weekend was actually a fundraiser for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS). I am part of a running team organized and sponsored by the LLS called Team In Training. It is a nationwide campaign.I invite you to check out my fundraising website for more information: http://pages.teamintraining.org/wch/hampton09/adetsky
