Iona College's Council on the Arts Joins Student Development to Present Cultural Tribute to Black History Month

New Rochelle, NY (January, 2011) February is Black History Month and each year the Office of Student Development at Iona College pays tribute to it with a variety of on-campus offerings. This year, the group has joined forces with the Iona Council on the Arts to present the following events:

On Tuesday, February 1 at noon, there will be an opening ceremony, featuring "King's Dream", a live performance and multi-media presentation by Key Arts Productions which offers a an inspiring tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. It will be held in the LaPenta Student Union End Zone. Join in celebrating King's legacy and his vision of tolerance, diversity and peace! For information, contact Key Arts Productions - (215) 228-7131.

Also opening that day will be a gallery exhibition in the Brother Kenneth Chapman Gallery. New Rochelle curator and artist Peridot Smith brings together a group of male and female artists of varying ages and media whose work speaks to the question of the black experience. The opening reception will take place Sunday, February 6, from 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm and there will be a Curator's Gallery Tour, on Thursday, February 10 at Noon.

Audiences around the globe have been captivated and moved by the ReadNex Poetry Squad, a much sought-after group that has been uplifting urban communities with their universal message and sound influenced by Hip-Hop, Soul, Latin and Caribbean music. Through the art of writing and the power of music, four spoken word poets/emcees and a DJ will present a lecture/demonstration, Tuesday, February 15, 5:00 pm in the Thomas J. Burke Lounge, Spellman Hall.

All events are free of charge.

The Brother Kenneth Chapman Gallery hours are: Monday - Thursday, noon - 5:00 pm and Thursday evening from 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm and Sunday, 2:00 pm - 5:00 pm
