Iona College's Speech and Hearing Club Wins $500 Community Service Award from National Speech Language Hearing Association
New Rochelle, NY (February, 2011) Iona College's Speech and Hearing Club, noted for its exemplary community service work, has won a $500 grant from the National Speech Language Hearing Association (NSSLHA) for its support of the Manhattan Chapter of the Hearing Loss Association of America (HLAA). The chapter empowers individuals with hearing loss with skills to improve their lives.

The Iona Club will use the grant to purchase and donate tools and equipment to the Manhattan HLAA chapter such as augmentative and alternative communication devices that allow people with severe or significant speech impairments to express themselves.
"As a chapter of the NSSLHA, the Iona College Speech and Hearing Club has not only been at the forefront as a forum for current issues in speech pathology, hearing and language but in helping individuals with hearing loss and other disorders that affect their ability to communicate," said Diana Ferrero-Paluzzi, Iona Associate Professor of Speech Communications Studies.
In recent years, Club members have participated "Strides for Speech Walk" to help raise funds for supplies for its on campus Speech-Language Pathology clinic, where senior students gain supervised experience. The Club has also donated some of the proceeds to the American Stroke Association to help benefit stroke victims.
