15 Freshmen Experience Community Outreach Firsthand - Iona in Mission: Go New Ro Program

NEW ROCHELLE, NY (August 2011) Iona College welcomed fifteen incoming first year students and two returning student leaders to the Iona in Mission: Go New Ro program.

Students participated in community service and leadership development in an effort to learn about servant leadership.  Highlights of the trip included; visiting the New Rochelle Public Library where they learned about New Rochelle’s rich history from City Historian Barbara Davis; visiting New Rochelle’s HOPE Community Services; Midnight Run, preparing and distributing sandwiches and clothing to the homeless in Manhattan; partnering with the New Rochelle Parks and Recreation Department to provide assistance with cleanup of Five Islands Park; and visiting with Christian Brothers in St. Joseph’s Care Residence.

The mission also offered students an opportunity to meet City Councilwoman Marianne Sussman for a Q and A to learn about city government and her start in public service. This annual initiative was co-sponsored by the offices of Campus Ministries and Off-Campus Housing with great support from the Office of Residential Life.
