Iona Honors the Memory of Beloved Faculty Member Dr. Eugene F. Stafford by Planting and Dedicating a Tree on Campus
New Rochelle, NY (October 2011) On Wednesday, October 12, Computer Science faculty and others from across the college joined Dr. Eugene F. Stafford’s (1942-2010) family and friends to dedicate a white dogwood tree in the oval outside Ryan Library in his honor. Gene came to Iona in 1968 and had a long and distinguished career in the History department before joining as a respected member of the Computer Science faculty. To honor his memory, the Computer Science department planted a tree with a plaque as a living tribute. Father Dixon presided over a brief blessing of the tree in front of Ryan Library. “The dogwood tree in front of Ryan Library dedicated to the memory of Gene Stafford acknowledges his life-long pursuit of learning and his dedication to Iona College for over forty years. The tree is a living tribute to a fine colleague and friend,” said Frances Bailie, assistant chair and graduate coordinator in the Computer Science department and the Coordinator of Freshman Advisement in the School of Arts & Science. “This is a wonderful tribute to Gene, he would be so proud and so honored that everyone thought of him so well,” said Eugene’s wife Dolores. Gene is survived by his wife Dolores, his brother, Rev. Joseph Stafford, three children Ken, Marlene and Susan, and five grand-children.
