NEW ROCHELLE, NY (November 30, 2011)  A large New York Metro area television viewing audience had a chance to get an inside look at Iona College’s newest educational tool when they saw a segment about the LaPenta-Lynch Trading Floor during the WABC-TV Eyewitness News broadcast last night. WABC-TV (Channel 7), New York City, is an affiliate station of the ABC Television Network.

The segment was the result of a visit to the trading floor on November 22 by WABC-TV’s education reporter Art McFarland and a cameraman who spent nearly two hours at the new facility located on the main floor of the Hagan School.  Iona is the only college in Westchester to offer a trading floor experience to students. McFarland’s story focused on how Iona’s trading floor is helping to prepare the next generation of financial professionals.

The report included interviews with Dr. Vincent Calluzzo, Dean of the Hagan School of Business, as well as some students majoring in finance who are learning first-hand how to use the same technology and analytic tools used on Wall Street and in the global market place.  With access to stock market quotations and the latest market news and announcements, students are able to build and track investment portfolios as if they are on an actual trading floor or in a corporate finance office.

Viewers also glimpsed some of the advanced technical features of the fully-equipped, simulated trading environment featuring 20 high-end networked trading desks and continuous live data feeds from Bloomberg.

The LaPenta-Lynch Trading Floor is named for two Iona graduates who have been long-time benefactors of Iona and are members of the College’s Board of Legal Trustees. They are Robert V. LaPenta, class of 1967, and Patrick J. Lynch, of the class of 1959, who together contributed $1 million to finance construction of the 860-square-foot trading floor. In addition to their gifts, Stephen Dowicz, class of 1979, and the NASDAQ OMX Group Educational Foundation have contributed an additional $750,000 in funding for the creation of the Center of Financial Market Studies. The Center will help prepare students for careers in corporate finance and the financial services industry.
