Iona College Celebrates Earth Day 2000
New Rochelle, New York April 4, 2000 - The 30th anniversary of the
original Earth Day will be celebrated on the New Rochelle campus on Tuesday,
April 18. All activities take place in Spellman Lounge and are open to the
public.
The activities begin at 11 am with an interdisciplinary panel discussion "Environmental
Issues for the 21st Century: Law, Religion and Health." Brian Nickerson, an
assistant professor of history and political science, will address the prospects
for implementation and enforcement of environmental law. Brian Brown, an associate
professor of Religious Studies and chair of the department, and author of the
recently published Religion, Law and the Land: Native Americans and the
Judicial Interpretation of Sacred Land, will highlight the religious and
spiritual aspects of the environment. They will be joined by Dr. Harold N.
Adel, recently retired as Westchester County Commissioner of Health, who will
address the relationship between the environment and health.
Dr. Adel has had a distinguished academic career at the Albert Einstein College
of Medicine, and served as a Fellow in Hospital Administration at Stanford
University Hospital. He was also responsible for starting an Environmental
Health Task Force to teach the public, develop programs, and recommend legislation
to minimize the use of pesticides by county residents, businesses and government.
Spellman Lounge is the site of various displays throughout the day, including
a photography exhibit featuring nature and environment-related works by students,
faculty, and staff. Information on transportation alternatives will be presented
by the Westchester County Department of Transportation. Environmental works
from the permanent collection will be on display in Ryan Library.
In addition, from 4 to 5 pm, Daniel R. Smith, a professor of history, political
science and geography, will present a slide show on nature photographs. Dr.
Smith is the co-author of Along the Pacific Crest Trail and Where
the Waters Divide: A 3,000 Mile Trek Along America's Continental Divide.
Earth Day will culminate in an Earth Day Café from 7:30 to 10:30 pm
featuring performances by Iona faculty, staff, students, and alumni. Alex Delfini,
associate professor of philosophy will serve as emcee for the evening.
