Iona College Selected for "Teaching Catholic
Social Teaching" Project
Joins Other Prominent Institutions of Higher Education at Notre Dame
New Rochelle, New York, April 28, 2000 - Iona College has been selected
to participate in "Teaching Catholic Social Teaching," a project sponsored
by the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana.
Funded through a grant from the Wabash Center for Teaching and Learning in
Theology and Religion, it is designed to facilitate the development of pilot
programs in Catholic social teaching at fourteen U.S. Catholic colleges and
universities. "Catholic social teaching" is the body of teachings found in
papal, episcopal, and Vatican Council II documents regarding human dignity
and rights, peace, social justice, and solidarity with the poor.
Michael W. Hovey, coordinator of Peace and Justice Education at Iona, will
represent the College in this yearlong project. He will consult with administrators
and faculty members prior to his departure to Notre Dame in August 2000. While
there, he will join other participants for a three-day working session to exchange
and develop program plans, that will be implemented during the 2000-2001 academic
year at the participant's home institutions. The participants will return to
the University of Notre Dame during the summer of 2001 in order to assess programs
and to draft a "white paper" on the teaching of Catholic social teaching in
U.S. Catholic colleges and universities.
Other colleges and universities involved with this project include Calumet
College, DePaul University, Dominican University, Loyola College of Baltimore,
Regis University (Denver), Sacred Heart University (Fairfield, CT), St. John's
University (New York), St. Joseph's University (Philadelphia), St. Peter's
College (Jersey City), Seattle University, Trinity College of Vermont, University
of St. Thomas (Houston, TX) and Villanova University.
