Iona Graduate Student Wins Prestigious Fellowship
New Rochelle, New York, May 3, 2000 - Ms. Allyce Nowak of Torrington, CT,
under the guidance of Dr. Joseph Stabile of Iona College's Biology Department,
has been awarded a Polgar Fellowship, which is sponsored by the Hudson River
Foundation and the National Estuarine Research Reserve. Eight Polgar Fellowships
are awarded annually, typically to graduate students conducting research on
the ecology of the Hudson River.
The Hudson ecosystem is contaminated with a variety of organic pollutants
such as dioxins and polychlorinated biphenyls (PBCs). Ms. Nowak will determine
the relative importance of three routes by which contaminants enter the bodies
of bottom feeding fish. She will quantify the amount of contaminants entering
through the skin, gills or through the food they eat.
The results of this study may be important in the design of monitoring and
remediation programs. Much of this work will be conducted on the Hudson River
at the dockside facilities of the River Project, a non-profit organization
dedicated to the preservation of the Hudson River.
