Brother Harry Dunkak '51, Tennis Coach Extraordinaire,
Joins Iona College's Hall of Fame
New Rochelle, New York, May 9, 2000 - Brother Harry Dunkak, an Iona
alumnus, and the most successful tennis coach in the history of Iona College,
will be inducted into the Iona College Hall of Fame on Monday, June 5, following
the golf outing at Wykagyl Country Club in New Rochelle.
As head tennis coach of the Gaels, from 1968-1978, he posted an impressive
144-23 overall record. His .862 winning percentage is the highest of any head
coach in the history of the College. Brother Dunkak's teams won six Metropolitan
Conference championships, recorded three undefeated seasons (1972, 1975, 1977)
and won 32 consecutive dual matches from 1977-1978.
Brother Dunkak spent time away from the tennis courts, as well. He was the
Faculty Representative to the athletic department from 1970-1980, and became
the athletic department's first academic advisor in 1978. He also served as
Assistant Dean of the School of Arts and Science from 1978-1983, and is currently
a Professor Emeritus of History at Iona.
