Basketball Coach at DePaul University Started Coaching Career in Northeast
New Rochelle, New York, May 9, 2000 - At Iona College's Hall of Fame
Dinner on Monday, June 5, Pat Kennedy, basketball coach at DePaul University
in Chicago, IL, will be inducted for his role in establishing the Iona College
basketball program as a mid-major power.
As assistant basketball coach from 1977-80, and as a member of Jim Valvano's
staff, he was instrumental in helping the Gaels make their first two NCAA appearances
in 1979 and 1980.
During his six seasons at the helm of Iona's basketball program, from 1980-1986,
the Gaels averaged more than 20 wins per season, won three MAAC titles, made
two appearances in the NCAA Tournament and twice participated in the NIT. His
wins included victories over Division I powerhouses such as South Carolina,
Georgia Tech, Ohio State and UNLV, as well as dominating local rivals Fordham
University and Manhattan College.
In 1986, Kennedy left Iona to become head coach at Florida State. During his
11 year tenure at FSU, he was named Coach of the Year in the Metro Conference,
as well as the Atlantic Coast Conference.
