Iona Professor Receives Journalism Teacher of the
Year Award
Freedom Forum Honors George Thottam
New Rochelle, New York, July 12, 2000 - George Thottam, a professor
in the department of mass communication at Iona College, will be honored as
a Freedom Forum Journalism Teacher for the year 2000. He will be presented
with a medal and a $10,000 check at The Freedom Forum's award luncheon in August.
The Journalism Teacher of the Year recognizes outstanding faculty members
for excellence in classroom teaching in the core areas of print and broadcast
journalism: reporting, editing, journalism history, media law or ethics.
Professor Thottam developed the College's largest undergraduate program while
teaching at Iona for the past 20 years. Among the 28 different undergraduate
and graduate courses he has taught are news writing, news reporting, copy editing,
feature writing and sports journalism. He has been instrumental in the design
of 19 of the undergraduate and graduate journalism courses, and established
the Journalism Institute for Minority High School Students and Journalism and
Mass Communication Day to attract high school students to journalism.
The Freedom Forum is a nonpartisan, international foundation dedicated to
free press, free speech and free spirit for all people. It was established
in 1991 under the direction of founder Allen H. Neuharth, as successor to the
Gannett Foundation, created by Frank E. Gannett in 1935.
