Iona College's Women's Studies Program Offers Broad
Range of Courses and Activities
New Rochelle, New York, July 12, 2000 - Iona's Women's Studies Program, housed
in the College's School of Arts and Science, is designed to enable students,
male and female, to examine the contributions of women to society, to explore
issues raised by contemporary feminists, and to study the effects of gender
roles on political, economic and social institutions.
Students can choose elective courses and/or a minor concentration in Women's
Studies, available through most of the School's academic departments. Developing
new perspectives on issues of gender and power cannot only be personally enlightening,
they are also useful in the pursuit of careers in law, government, psychology,
social services, communications, education, business and medicine - all of
which require an understanding of changing roles and expectations in American
society.
The Women's Studies curriculum is augmented by special program elements throughout
the academic year, including a monthly Brown Bag Lunch series that runs from
October through April and Women's History Week, March 4-9, 2001 that will examine
the 20-year history of the Women's Studies Program at Iona. Many of the activities
sponsored by the Women's Studies Program are open to the public.
