New Rochelle, New York, July 27, 2000 - In a first for Iona College,
seven graduate students in the College's Master's Program in Health Care Administration,
will present their master's theses at the general, not student, sections of
the 10th World Congress on Social Economics, to be held at Emmanuel College,
University of Cambridge, UK, from August 6-9, 2000.
The conference, sponsored by the Association for Social Economics, was founded
to advance scholarship and writing about the great questions of economics,
human dignity, ethics and philosophy.
The students' presentations, accepted after blind peer review of their abstract
proposals, will address the Congress's theme "Social Economics Speaks to Contemporary
Human Issues." They are:
- Camille Francesca Edwards - "Methadone, Medicaid and Managed Care: The
U.S. Experience;"
- Steven Freifeld - "Financing Long Term Care for the Elderly;"
- Irene Giarolo - "Genetic Engineering's Impact on Society;"
- Nichole Michaels - "The Socioeconomic Applications of Holistic Care within
First and Third World Countries;"
- Marcia Nevers-Smith - "The Economics of the Impending Nursing Shortage;"
- Brian P. Quinn - "Medicare Caps: Decline in Rehabilitation Services and
the Effect on the Elderly;" and
- Maureen Quiles - "The Social Economic Implications of the Federal Regulations
on Informed Consent."
Their faculty mentor, Vincent Maher, JD, assistant professor of Health Care
Programs at Iona, will chair two sessions and will also present two papers
: "The Economics of Incredulity" and "The Economic Cost of Humane Health Law," presented
with Dr. Joseph W. Ford. Dr. Ford will be joined by other distinguished Iona
faculty, Dr. Charles O'Donnell and Dr. Irene Hammerbacher, who together will
present "Women and Old Age" and "Survivor's Insurance Programs."
"The participation of these students, currently employed in the health care
industry at such notable institutions as Albert Einstein College of Medicine,
Mt. Sinai-New York University Medical Center and Health Care System, Montefiore
Medical Center, Sound Shore Medical Center and St. Charles Hospital and Medical
Center, demonstrates the value-added character of an Iona education," commented
Dr. Warren Rosenberg, dean of the School of Arts and Science, at a reception
for the students and faculty, held on campus in July. "Each addresses the issues
of ethics, human dignity and justice, within an economic framework, and these
are precisely the issues that form the core of an Iona education."
