SCOPE Program Aids First-Generation College Students, the Disabled, or those
with Low Incomes
New Rochelle, N.Y., September 14 . Iona College has received a grant
of $226,698 . one of the largest grants in its 60-year history . from the U.S.
Department of Education for the 1999-2000 academic year. The funding, which
represents 99 percent of the funds of the project, will support the TRIO Student
Support Services Program. Known as SCOPE (Students. Comprehensive Orientation
Program for Educational Success) at Iona, the program provides free services
to first-generation college students, those from low-income households or who
are disabled. Total cost of Iona. s SCOPE program will be $229,198; the remaining
one percent ($2,500) of the required funds will be provided by Iona College.
Through SCOPE, eligible Iona students will receive personal and academic counseling,
student skills assessment, tutoring in writing techniques, tutoring in math,
financial aid counseling, career planning, peer mentors and tutors and cultural
enrichment activities. The program will operate Monday-Friday from 8:30 am-4:30
pm out of room 203 of Amend Hall at the New Rochelle campus.
SCOPE staff includes Dr. Loretta M. Hauser, Director; Sandra D. Mikulick,
Counselor; Shari Baumgarten, Counselor; Heather Ostman, Writing Specialist;
Robert TenEyck, Math Specialist and Thomas Vecchione, Office Assistant.
Iona College, founded by the Christian Brothers in 1940, is a private, coeducational
