IONA College Receives $46,305 Grant from Foundation for Independent Higher Education

Funding to Help Student Teachers use Computers, Internet as Assessment Tools

New Rochelle, N.Y., October 5 - The Foundation for Independent Higher Education (FIHE) has awarded a $46,305 grant to Iona College for a program entitled "Teachers, Technology and Portfolios - Changing Pedagogy and Assessment in the Information Age" during the 1999-2000 academic year. The grant was part of the 1999 AT&T Learning Network Teaching and Technology Grants program.

"Teachers, Technology and Portfolios" will help student teachers utilize information technology to create web-based, digital portfolios. These portfolios will be used as assessment tools in evaluating how student teachers prepare to teach in the global and more technologically oriented society of the next millenium. The portfolio strategy allows multiple measures of performance to be gathered during the teacher preparation program, helping the student teachers identify their strengths and areas where they could improve. In addition, the portfolios will incorporate technology driven lesson plans, thus preparing the pre-service teachers to fully integrate technology into the teaching/learning process.

This program will be conducted under the direction of Dr. Dianne Goldsby, Assistant Chairwoman and Assistant Professor of Education, and Dr. Minaz Fazal, Educational Technology Specialist.

Two other colleges are collaborating on "Teachers, Technology and Portfolios": The University of Scranton (Pa.) and Bellarmine College in Louisville, Ky.

Iona College, founded by the Christian Brothers in 1940, is a private, coeducational institution of learning in the tradition of American Catholic higher education. Iona offers undergraduate degrees in liberal arts, science and business administration, as well as Master of Arts, Master of Science and Master of Business Administration degrees and numerous post-graduate programs.
