Local Professor Receives National Recognition
New Rochelle, New York, April 11, 2000 - Br. James T. Carroll, PhD,
a professor at Iona College in New Rochelle, NY, has been selected from a national
applicant pool to attend one of 22 summer study opportunities supported by
the National Endowment for the Humanities. The Endowment is a federal agency
that each summer supports seminars and institutes at colleges and universities
enabling teachers to work in collaboration and study with experts in humanities
disciplines.
Professor Carroll will participate in an institute entitled "Traversing Borders:
A Southwestern Studies Faculty Institute." The four-week program will be held
at Southwest Texas State University, San Marcos, TX., and will be directed
by Mark Busby, director, Center for the Study of the Southwest.
The 25 professors selected to participate in the program each receive a stipend
of $2,800 to cover their travel, study, and living expenses.
Topics for the 22 seminars and institutes offered for college and university
professors this summer include the civil rights movement, bioethics, modern
European culture and politics, the Mayan world, opera, and Southwestern studies.
The approximately 400 plus professors who participate in these studies will
teach over thirty thousand American students the following year.
