New Rochelle, NY (October 29, 2012) Iona College has announced the decision to cancel day and evening classes on Monday, October 29, 2012 at the New Rochelle and Rockland campuses has been extended to Tuesday, October 30, 2012 due to the effects of Hurricane Sandy. All administrative offices will also be closed.
“Iona administration will continue to monitor the weather conditions and evaluate this situation as we move forward,” said Charlie Carlson, vice provost for Student Development. Students, faculty and staff are asked to monitor the College’s email and text messaging system during the storm.
All students, especially resident students, are asked to keep in close contact with their parents and keep them apprised of their safety. Parents can also check the Iona College website at www.iona.edu for updates on emergency preparedness related to Hurricane Sandy. This is important since most campus offices will be closed during the storm. The LaPenta Student Union will remain open during the storm and will have food services available from 9:00 am to 7:00 pm on Monday and Tuesday. This schedule will be extended if necessary. All students can park their vehicles on one of the upper levels of the parking garage in cases of local flooding.
College senior level administrators will be present on campus and communicate during this storm by the text messaging system, in person meetings, email, and notices posted on the Iona College homepage. Students are reminded to sign up for text messaging at: http://www.iona.edu/studentlife/safety/campusalert.cfm.
All resident students will be advised by the office of Residential Life when there is a need to shelter in place, by remaining in their rooms and away from windows, during the direct impact of the hurricane/storm. Students should follow the directions of the professional and student staff. The shuttle service will also be suspended during the “shelter in place” time period due to safety concerns and this will be announced by text message. All off-campus students are welcome to stay in the Mulcahy Gym in the event that there is a power outage in off-campus housing.
Senior level members of the administration continue to remain on campus throughout the storm and are closely monitoring conditions. All students are encouraged to be safe and make responsible decisions and to comply with the directions of the City of New Rochelle and all emergency personnel.
The offices of Campus Safety and Security, Facilities Management, Food Services and Residential Life have all activated their emergency response plans due to the hurricane to ensure the safety of students and the campus. Any concerns can be directed to Charlie Carlson at ccarlson@iona.edu or 914-633-2360.
