Iona College Raises $258,670 at the 39th Annual Board of Trustees Invitational at Winged Foot Golf Club

New Rochelle, NY (November 6, 2012) Iona College raised $258, 670 at the 39th Annual Board of Trustees Invitational at the prestigious Winged Foot Golf Club in Mamaroneck, NY on Monday, October 22.  Each year the proceeds of the Invitational directly support the Winged Foot Scholarship at Iona College, it is also an opportunity for Winged Foot employees and their families to apply to qualify for scholarship credits at the College.

“Through foursomes, donations and a live auction, the money raised surpassed last year’s totals by nearly $30K and was the third highest total in the past 12 years,” said Paul J. Sutera, senior vice president of Advancement and External Affairs.

More than 200 golfers enjoyed a beautiful day on both the East and West courses, including contests such as “Beat the Pro,” which was staffed by Mike Gilmore, Winged Foot’s head golf professional.  Along with golf, guests enjoyed a lavish breakfast, lunch and dinner provided by Winged Foot.

This year’s scholarship recipient, Yadira Tejeda ’13, addressed more than 125 guests during dinner and shared her story. She stated, “Until this day I will never forget the feeling I had, and how much I cried the day I found out that I qualified for the Winged Foot Scholarship at Iona College. This moment was the turning point in my life. I had been given a second chance at my school of choice to finish my degree and achieve my dream.”  In May 2013 Yadira will become the first member of her family to graduate college when she receives her bachelor’s degree.  Post-graduation plans for Yadira include continuing at Iona in the MBA program.

Other highlights of the evening included a special acknowledgement to Winged Foot Golf Club host Charles H. McCabe ’68MBA, ’88H and event chairman J. Riley McDonough ’72 for their generosity and leadership in spearheading the event’s success.
