Choosing a major doesn't have to be a long trip with many curves and turns. Whether you think you know what major you want or you are undecided, this section will help you make a more informed decision.

Before you start on your journey, how does choosing a major affect you?

• Selecting a major is one of the most important decisions you will make at Iona College. As you take courses, join extra-curricular activities and interact with professors and classmates, you may become interested in one or more majors or change your mind. Your challenge is to make a decision that is right for you.
• You will need to decide on a major by the end of your freshman year. There are some students that arrive at Iona and know exactly what major and career field they want to pursue. The majority of students do not know and many will change their mind. The good news is there are several resources at Iona to help you make your decision.
• A variety of feelings and questions may arise when choosing a major. You may experience a wide range from enthusiasm and excitement to anxiety or concern. You may ask yourself:
  • Will I be able to handle the course load?
  • Do I have the right skills?
  • Am I being influenced by someone?
  • Will my parents feel good or be disappointed in the major I choose?
  • What jobs will I be able to get with this major?

  Your voice is ultimately the one that matters, so gather information that will help you to make the right choice.

• Choosing a major doesn't bind you to a specific career field for life. Most majors prepare you for a wide range of careers. Also, job studies show that most people will change their career four or five times over their lifetime due to the fact that interests change with experience. As you acquire skills and experience in the work world, new options will open up for you.
