Conducting an effective job/internship search requires resume and cover letter preparation as well as interview practice. The Center for Career Development recommends that you meet with a Career Advisor to review the resume and cover letter and conduct a mock interview. The following resources will assist you in successfully marketing yourself for a job.
Resume Building Guide:
A resume is a brief written account of your personal, educational and professional qualifications and experience. Resumes are your own personal “marketing tool” designed to grab and attract the attention of potential employers. A resume should interest an employer in getting to know more about the product (you)!!!
Cover Letter Guide:
A Cover Letter gives you the opportunity to sell yourself to the employer beyond your resume. In a Cover Letter you will have the opportunity to market yourself for the specific position for which you are applying. A Cover Letter is also considered a writing sample, and employers may use this document as one method of screening out unqualified candidates.
References:
Positive references can get you the job you want. Hiring is competitive, companies are selective. Good job references can make the difference in getting hired. “Honor these rules of etiquette for good job references and they should continue singing your praises for a long time. Thank You Notes:
It is important to send a thank you note after each interview you attend. This note shows the employer that you recognize that they took the time out of their busy day to meet with you. In a thank you letter, it gives you the opportunity to reiterate your strengths, make additional points you may have forgotten to mention, as well as gives another example of your written communication skills.
