Approximately 125 million people have Facebook and/or MySpace accounts. These two web sites are a great way to chat with friends, learn about on-campus events, and post pictures of daily life. However, these websites can also have a negative impact on one’s life if not used properly. Below, please find a list of “dos and don’ts” for Facebook and MySpace.
Do:
Use the security options to allow only your designated “friends” to view your account. Facebook and MySpace both provide these options and this will cut down on unknown people accessing your information.
Understand that any information you post on Facebook or MySpace becomes public property; therefore, be careful of posting any information you would not want the world to see.
Use Facebook and MySpace to post sanctioned on-campus events.
Don’t:
Do not post personal information (your address, cell phone number, class schedule) that could allow any unknown person to locate you at any given time.
Do not post pictures of yourself engaged in activities that are illegal (smoking marijuana, underage drinking, engaging in vandalism). Your Facebook or MySpace account could potentially be accessed by future employers or schools.
Do not join Facebook or MySpace groups that promote illegal activities or hatred of others. Again, your account can be accessed and involvement with these groups could be detrimental to your future.
Do not describe on “walls” or message boards any illegal or inappropriate behavior in which you have taken part.
Following these guidelines will allow you to use these exciting and interesting websites and still maintain your status as a skilled and ethical decision maker. Good luck and have fun.
