Amnesty International (AI)
Amnesty International (AI) is a worldwide movement of people who campaign for internationally recognized human rights. AI's vision is of a world in which every person enjoys all of the human rights enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and other international human rights standards. In pursuit of this vision, AI's mission is to undertake research and action focused on preventing and ending grave abuses of the rights to physical and mental integrity, freedom of conscience and expression, and freedom from discrimination, within the context of its work to promote all human rights". http://web.amnesty.org/pages/aboutai-index-eng.We are happy to announce that since 2005, Amnesty International has its chapter at Iona College, where students, mostly of different backgrounds, take action and fight for the human rights not only for those in our communities, but for those whose rights are often forgotten, disrespected, and finally taken away.

Our Mission:

The chapter of Amnesty International at Iona College hosts few events throughout the academic year. Our most successful one, "The Cultural Dinner" brought together Amnesty's members, other Iona students and faculty members and further helped to realize, as well as appreciate different cultures due to diverse meals and dishes. The club is planning to host the same event in the fall. Another event, which was well known throughout the whole campus, was Jail – a – thon, during which Amnesty's members were imprisoned in the jail, which was set up right outside Spellman. To free those "prisoners" (club members), students and faculty members had to sign a petition. The purpose of this event was to stop torture and unjust imprisonment, which unfortunately, could perhaps easily happen to us if we lived in another part of the world.

In addition, chapter of Amnesty International at Iona College in its "letter campaign", on the behalf of the unjustly imprisoned ones, writes letters to governments and different officials to release them. In February 2006, members of Amnesty International at Iona College became part of the world – wide campaign to release Mr. Durdykuliev, who was imprisoned unjustly and later taken to a mental institution in his country, Turkmenistan. The club wrote letters to different government officials and hosted "Movie nights" during which movies that fight for human rights were shown.

In May 20006, Mr. Durdykuliev was released. Furthermore, twice a year, two – three members of the Amnesty International at Iona College attend both regional and national conferences of Amnesty International during which current political issues are discussed and new workshops and trainings are provided for the members.
