Iona Participates in Ninth Annual MLK Jr. Build in Lower Westchester

1/30/2018
NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. - Iona College’s Office of Mission and Ministry collaborated with Habitat for Humanity and the Interreligious Council of New Rochelle on Sunday, January 21, to engage 70 people from Iona and five local congregations in the Habitat mission, building affordable housing and repairing homes and community centers in the area.

In its ninth year in 2018, the Dr. Martin Luther King Build included 16 Iona students who worked alongside youth members of the Islamic Center of New Rochelle, Holy Family Church, New Rochelle United Methodist Church, New Rochelle Relig, and Temple Israel. Multiple activities took place throughout the day. In New Rochelle, volunteers helped put a fresh coat of paint on the ground floor of the American Legion. At the Habitat Re-Store on Main Street, participants painted and helped to reorganize the display area of the store. Projects in Yonkers included the completion and final cleaning and painting for an apartment duplex on High Street, in addition to the demolition of the insides of a two-floor row house on Moquette Street.

The afternoon of activities began with a kickoff breakfast and dedication of the day’s activities to the well-being of New Rochelle young people, the vision of non-violence of Dr. King, and the life of Valaree Schwab, the New Rochelle High School student who was killed on January 10.
