New Rochelle, NY (August 1, 2013) Dean Sibdas Ghosh, Ph.D., convened a three-day on-site retreat for chairs and directors from the School of Art & Sciences on July 17. Within weeks of his arrival at Iona in April, Dr. Ghosh indicated his desire to work closely with the faculty on undergraduate curricular issues, the college’s liberal arts and science core, and our graduate programs and announced this retreat. Using a variety of Iona’s own faculty as presenters and facilitators, the more than 30 faculty in attendance engaged in activities which brought focus to the desired student learning outcomes of Iona’s core program.
Iona chairs and directors cited an understanding of a global perspective, advanced oral and writing skills, critical thinking, a social justice perspective, and a commitment to diversity as highly prized attributes in Iona graduates. Additionally, the group indicated that the instructional delivery model of the revised core should include interdisciplinary learning, increased student choice, fewer credits, and freshmen seminars with a renewed commitment to core classes taught by full-time faculty.
At the end of the retreat Dr. Ghosh announced the formation of an eight-member project team which will continue the work of core redesign in the coming year. The group also engaged in visioning activities related to Iona’s graduate programs within the School of Arts & Science. The work of that group and the formation of five-year plans will continue in the coming year.
