On October 15, over 200 Iona faculty and staff attended a community address by the Interim Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs, Michael Marsden, Ph.D. in the Christopher J. Murphy Auditorium. President Joseph E. Nyre, Ph.D. introduced Dr. Marsden who delivered brief remarks detailing key goals in the Provost’s area for this academic year.
Dr. Marsden discussed his professional career experience in higher education which spans more than four decades and now including Iona College, six institutions, four of which were public and two of which have been private. His current focus is to support Iona’s mission, goals and continued success for academic excellence.
“I will do my best to keep my communications open and consistent with all groups and individuals,” said Dr. Marsden. “I pledge to work with each of you to seek solutions to issues now rather than later. I will also pledge to do so with as much humor as possible.”
He described his support for the mission centered goals of the Strategic Plan including but not limited to: increasing student retention and graduation rates, reviewing current undergraduate graduate programs, enhancing faculty and staff broad-based professional development programs and providing students with a variety of opportunities for study abroad.
Dr. Marsden will provide a mid-year progress report in January and an end of spring semester progress report. He stated he is looking forward to working collaboratively with all staff to keep the robust agenda moving forward by providing support and sharing whatever experience he has gleaned over the years.
The presentation was followed by a question and answer session and an informal reception in the President’s Dining Room in Driscoll Hall.
Dr. Marsden resides in New Rochelle with his wife Mary.
