New Rochelle, NY (August 27, 2014) Five Iona College chemistry/biochemistry majors, along with their mentors, Drs. Sunghee Lee, Joseph Ryan, and Kathleen Kristian from the Chemistry department, proudly joined the chemistry community and presented their research at the 248th American Chemical Society (ACS) National Meeting on August 10-14, held in San Francisco.
“Over 15,000 chemists from throughout the world attended this national meeting to share great chemistry,” said Dr. Lee.
Dr. Lee presented the talk at the Division of Colloid and Surface Chemistry, titled "Engineering of Monolayers and Bilayers at an Aqueous Microdroplet" and Dr. Kristian presented the talk at the Division of Chemical Education, titled "Teaching collaboration skills through a wiki-based inorganic chemistry group project”.
The students also presented two posters summarizing their research results on;
(1) "Water permeability studies using a droplet interface bilayer: Effect of monoglyceride structure and cholesterol content" (2) "Adaptability of monoglyceride-templated crystallization at the liquid-liquid interface"
The student presenters and attendees were Michelle Muzzio ('15, Chemistry), Omoakhe Tisor ('15, Biochemistry), Peter Milianta ('16, Biochemistry), Melissa Morales ('16, Chemistry), and Geoffrey Cawley ('16, Chemistry). Their trip was supported by the National Science Foundation research grant awarded to Dr. Lee and Iona College.
