New Rochelle, NY (January 16, 2015) Paul Beaudin, Ph.D., associate dean and professor of Education at Iona College, will present “Looking at School Reform through a Different Lens” at the Distinguished Lecture Series hosted at Iona Preparatory School K-12. The lecture previously scheduled for Wednesday, January 21 at 7 p.m. is postponed and will be rescheduled for a later date.
In this lecture, Dr. Beaudin will put the Common Core State Standards and recent educational reform in P – 12 education into context. The lecture will also discuss the current state of standardized achievement assessment and will make the case that the ultimate goal of current reform is to build student understanding and help learners to develop habits of mind which will serve them well.
The Distinguished Lecture Series began in September 2014 and runs through May 2015. The series showcases the work of Iona College faculty members and highlights the long-time relationship of the College and Iona Prep. Iona College faculty present on various topics of interest to parents, students and the general public.
The lectures are open to the public and will take place in Room 401 of the D’Urso Conference Center at Iona Preparatory School, 255 Wilmot Road, New Rochelle, N.Y.

“One Droplet at a Time: From Biological Membranes to Crystallization”
This lecture will focus on the interfacial chemistry of the aqueous microdroplet – cell-sized watery compartments that offer a powerful and controllable model for bilayers, the essential feature of cell membranes. By studying such systems, researchers have obtained important insights into a wide variety of biologically relevant phenomena, such as biomineralization, membrane permeability, and inorganic crystal nucleation.
