New Rochelle, NY (November 3, 2014) Iona College has been selected as one of 98 colleges and universities honored by the U.S. Department of Education for leadership in developing programs in interfaith/community service. The President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll, launched in 2006, recognizes exemplary work by colleges and universities to place students on a lifelong path of civic engagement.
This year was the first in which a category was included to honor schools that incorporate interfaith engagement as a component of community service programs. In order to be selected in this category, colleges and universities had to demonstrate success in building relationships between community members of differing faiths and backgrounds while engaging in service projects.
Inclusion of this category came out of the President’s Interfaith and Community Service Campus Challenge – an initiative inviting colleges and universities to commit to a year of interfaith cooperation and community service. In 2011, President Obama invited all college and university presidents to join the challenge and develop, or expand, their interfaith/community service programs. Currently, more than 500 schools have responded.
