New Rochelle, NY (September 24, 2014) Over 50 Iona College students, faculty, and staff attended the historic People's Climate March on Sunday, September 21.
The Iona contingent was led in song by Sr. Kathleen Deignan, Ph.D., professor of Religious Studies and director of the Iona Spirituality Institute. “Carrying the Iona College banner and wearing our colors, we demonstrated our community's commitment to work for serious climate action,” said Sr. Deignan.
Led by moderator Thomas Van Cleave, Ed.D., director of Service and Experiential Learning, participants included the student group Iona College Greens and The Thomas Berry Forum for Ecological Dialogue. Activists joined the nearly 400,000 citizens as they paraded through the canyons of Manhattan.
"Joining the People's Climate March was an incredibly important experience for our students and our society as a whole,” said Dr. Van Cleave. “It was a model example of what our options are when we as citizens see that our political officials might be more influenced by corporate dollars as opposed to ensuring that we have policies and laws in place that protect our earth and its resources.”
Their purpose was to urge world leaders, who have come to the UN this week for a climate summit, to make substantial progress on policies to curb humanity's effects on climate change. “The Iona community is truly ‘moving the world’ towards a healthier and greener world,” said Yourha Kang, Ph.D., associate professor of Biology.
“This demonstration will hopefully serve as a catalyst for change, similar to the few but significant other public rallies when the people stand up and say, 'enough is enough,'" added Dr. Van Cleave.
