New Rochelle, NY (February 4, 2015) Over $15,000 was raised by Iona students at the first annual IonaTHON dance marathon at Iona College on Friday, January 30 from 6:00 pm - 12:00 am in Mulcahy Gym. Over 425 students and guests danced and auctioned off items to raise money to benefit Maria Fareri Children's Hospital at Westchester Medical Center.
During the six hour night, students danced, hula-hooped and laughed with the children were treated to a special night of fun. While the DJs and emcee kept the crowd dancing, each hour one of the children alongside their families told the story of their hardships and experience with Maria Fareri Children's Hospital.
"It really gave Iona students a reason to keep going through the night. Standing for 6 hours is nothing compared to what those kids have gone through in their short lives" said Louis Dallojacono, '15
Items that the children decorated and autographed helped the event to land a total of $15,015.00 raised by 12:00am that night.
"We knew that we had the odds against us with only three months to plan IonaTHON. That being said, this event is a testament to the extreme generosity of the students, faculty, staff, and administrators at Iona College" said Amanda Boyle '15 and Devin Green, '15, Co-Founders of the event.
Special thanks to the Iona Alumni who helped the event to be a success: Robert Hines '12 who donated his time to DJ the event, Joe Chera '01 from Big Town Productions for donating the lighting for the event, and Meredith Buono '97 and Caitlin Kirschbaum, the hospital representatives from Maria Fareri who helped bring the event to fruition.
"It was an awesome experience to be a part of such a fantastic event for a cause bigger than any one of us as an individual. I really enjoyed watching and being a part of this event that united different groups of people around campus, and gave us a huge, inspiring reason to come together to help children in need." Natalie Ziskin '16 (honors student, volleyball team, member of committee planning IonaTHON).
The event benefited Hudson Valley children undergoing open-heart surgery, brain surgery, trauma and burn care, cancer treatments and other advanced services at Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital. Students shared the dance floor with multiple families whose children have had lifesaving and life-changing care at the children’s hospital for the Hudson Valley and Fairfield County.
Dance marathons occur on college campuses nationwide and raise $6 million annually for local Children's Miracle Network hospitals. IonaTHON will join the northeast as one of the few dance marathons of its kind in the region.
